More choice than ever!

Posted by Ruth Hatchett on 06 July 2010

More choice than ever! We can now offer LuciePellets. This is the same high quality lucerne that goes into our LucieNuts, but the pellets are smaller at 6mm instead of 10-12mm of the Nuts.

If you prefer to use dry feeds this may be more appropriate. They also fit better into feed balls and are a little less expensive.

However, even if you may find feeding dry more convenient, it is better to feed at least well dampened and best to feed soaked - after all grazing is around 70% or more water

Ragwort Alert

Posted by Ruth Hatchett on 06 July 2010

Almost everyone involved with horses will know about the dangers that ragwort poses – every year animals die painful and unnecessary deaths as a result of damage to their liver from consuming the toxic plant. Despite this, ragwort levels seem to be on the increase and the BHS has certainly seen this in the number of cases reported over the last few years. This suggests that the laws governing ragwort (Weeds Act 1959, Ragwort Control Act 2003) are not being enforced and that many horse owners are not taking the threat the plant represents seriously.
It is a myth that horses will not eat ragwort, and even small amounts can cause damage to the liver, the effects being cumulative and irreversible.
Plants are best sprayed at the rosette stage in spring/early summer, but if any do survive to the flowering stage, they must be pulled by hand to prevent them from seeding.
Gloves should be worn as the plants can also be dangerous to human health and the toxins absorbed through the skin.
The BHS is conducting a survey from July12-19th for people to report the location and prevelance of ragwort in their area, in order to gauge the true extent of the problem in the UK. If you wish to participate in this survey, please visit the BHS website for more details. www.bhs.org.uk Read more

Simple System feeds gain BAHNM recognition

Posted by Ruth Hatchett on 29 April 2010

Simple System feeds gain BAHNM recognition.

“As Simple System Ltd has always believed in an holistic approach to horse care and feeding, it is great that we are now recognised in our aims by such a well respected authority as BAHNM.  Horses evolved on the mainly treeless plains of central Eurasia, and their natural diet is what grows in their natural environment. This will be grass, herbs, forbs and shrubs and does not include cereals, pulses and the by products of human food production!  BAHNM also approves the Green Dog food we now supply, which also aims to feed dogs as they were evolved to eat.  When you read the list of ingredients of many horse feeds, it is hard to imagine that some of the things on the list could ever be considered as suitable for horses at all!”
